Bakehouse Bread Company started out as a retail bakery specializing in artisan breads under the name “Village Bakehouse" in Tucson, Arizona. My wife, Nancy and I moved from Michigan to open up a small retail outlet that we thought would be a nice change and a little less hectic than the careers that we both left behind.

We hired consultants from San Francisco, purchased all new equipment, and got into bread dough up to our elbows. From the day we opened, we were overwhelmed at how our neighbors embraced us and our products. We soon developed pastries, sandwiches, and coffee drinks, the more items we made the more the people wanted. Along the way we forgot to leave the less hectic life behind.

Restaurants and retailers started coming to us because they wanted our products in their restaurants and stores. Within the first year our little stress free enterprise had become a 24 hour a day, seven day a week operation. In 1999 we opened a second retail outlet, and soon after we opened an 8,000 square foot production facility so that we could keep up with the ever growing demand for our products.

Our real passion was creating the artisan breads, so in 2001 we decided to sell the retail stores so we could focus entirely on the wholesale aspect of the business. We sold the name “Village Bakehouse” as a part of the sale, so our business became Bakehouse Bread Company.

As we have grown, we proudly look back at what we have created; the people we have worked with, the companies that we have worked with, and we look forward to many more great things in the future.
